Heart of Florida United Way’s Mission United RideShare program was a lifeline for Jeremy Lam, a disabled Air Force Veteran. It allowed veterans to access the resources they need in their everyday lives whether doctor appointments, legal consultations, job interviews, and even a trip to the grocery store. Once a Veteran submitted a ride request, our Mission United staff texted, emailed, or verbally provided the code to the approved Veteran within one hour of the request.
One night, the Lyft program proved to be a lifesaver. When Jeremy experienced severe chest pains, he was able to quickly and safely access medical care at the emergency room at Lake Nona VA Medical Center without having to worry about an expensive ambulance bill.
As a Type 1 Diabetic with Diabetic Retinopathy, driving has become unsafe for Jeremy. The Mission United RideShare program ensures he can continue to participate in important activities like attending Disabled American Veterans meetings and volunteering at food pantries and the Domiciliary.
And as a result, the program enabled him to maintain his independence so that he could participate in activities that brightened his days, like attending church, volunteering with the Soldier’s Angels, Second Harvest, the Wounded Warriers Project and mentoring as an Eagle Scout.
