Celebrating Two Years of the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Two years ago, the United States transitioned the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to a new three-digit dialing code, 988.

The transition made the vitally important mental health resource accessible by simply pressing three buttons. As a result, the lifeline has seen a significant increase in calls — supporting more people in need than ever before.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Since the transition, 988 nationally has received nearly 9.6 million calls, texts, and chat outreach from those in need.

With over 200 local crisis centers, including the HFUW-operated Central Florida center, 988 is a lifeline of hope, connecting individuals to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline through a network of centers that provide free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States.
