History of the Tocqueville Society
Rooted in Philanthropy
Alexis de Tocqueville, a French diplomat and historian, toured America in the 1830s — detailing his travels in his book, Democracy in America. Among his most noble observations was a phenomenon he found unique to America: generosity and volunteerism.
Tocqueville believed that to create a vibrant civil society, people must join forces for a mutual purpose, both in the public and private sectors.
The Tocqueville Society was created to honor the spirit of the man who recognized one of our society’s greatest strengths and shared that knowledge with the world. A rich history and profound passion for the community are hallmarks of the Tocqueville Society.
Members embody the bold vision and inspired generosity that invigorates HFUW’s mission to make Central Florida a better place to live for everyone.
