Shantel Smith had always prided herself on being financially responsible, carefully budgeting every dollar to make ends meet. But despite her best efforts, life threw her a curveball.

When her car broke down, the repair costs were more than she could afford. The weight of unplanned expenses loomed large, and Shantel faced the difficult reality that she might have to drop out of college.

In her moment of uncertainty, Shantel turned to her Seminole State College Advisor, who recommended she connect with Heart of Florida United Way’s Destination Graduation program. It was there that she met Jackie, a Destination Graduation Case Manager who instantly made Shantel feel at ease. Describing Jackie as warm, comforting, and encouraging, Shantel found the support she so desperately needed.

With the case manager’s guidance, Destination Graduation and Seminole State College stepped in to help Shantel temporarily cover her rent while Heart of Florida United Way assisted with her electric bill(s). The Destination Graduation program working with Seminole State College Financial Aid & Foundation office provided a book voucher and helped her earn a scholarship, ensuring she had the resources necessary to continue her education and pay her unplanned expenses.

With United Way’s Destination Graduation program and Seminole State College assistance and her own unwavering determination, Shantel not only earned her Associate of Arts degree from Seminole State College but remained enrolled and is now working towards her bachelor’s degree.

Shantel’s journey is a testament to the power of “a hand up” and the resilience of the human spirit.
